Offline files: one network share, two users and encryption -> problems
Suppose you have a share \\server\tools Suppose you want to use offline files on \\laptop for \\server\tools share. Suppose you have two users X and Y. Suppose X makes \\server\tools offline available. Suppose X encrypts his offline files. Suppose Y tries to make \\server\tools offline available. Problem: Y can do this, and the files do seem as if they are available offline, but they can not be read. Presumably because the cached files are encrypted by user X. In online-mode everything works fine and user Y can read files from \\server\tools. For me, not using encryption is not an option, but I do not see how I can fix this so both users can use encryption and can access the same share in offline mode. One possibility is to let the system-account encrypt the whole CSC folder. That would be a good enough solution, but I have not managed to do so. Win 7 seems not to allow CSC folder to be encrypted. Has anyone any ideas how this can be solved decently? Regards, Davor

Hi, This is by design. Because the local cache is per computer and not per user, there is only one copy of each file stored in the local cache. When the cache is encrypted, the first user who selects a file to be made available offline is the only user who will have access to that file when working offline. Other users will be able to access that file only when working online. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. This is by design. Go tha far but I a trying to find a solution... Is there a way to encrypt the cache with the system account? Like encrypting the CSC folder? Note: encrypting the CSC folder with the system account was easy in win XP.

Hi, Based on my experience, the answer is no. But if you want to encrypt the files on the System partition, you may consider using Bitlocker. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. One possibility is to let the system-account encrypt the whole CSC folder. That would be a good enough solution, but I have not managed to do so. Win 7 seems not to allow CSC folder to be encrypted. I managed to encrypt the files with the SYSTEM encryption key but Offlines Files fails to start: In the event log I find "The Offline Files service terminated with the following error: The system cannot find the path specified." As far as I know, this worked under Windows XP... What is the problem now?
